Dr. Harinder S. Chatrath has loved animals for as long as he can remember. Growing up in the peaceful suburbs of Eastern Punjab, India, he spent much of his time on the family farm-farming, caring for dairy cattle, spotting wildlife, and exploring the riverbanks nearby. These early experiences helped shape his lifelong commitment to animal health and well-being.
During this time, he shared a special bond with his childhood companion, Tomi-a loyal Alsatian (German Shepherd) who was always by his side on the farm. Tomi’s passing left a lasting impact on him and deepened his emotional connection to animals. It was also around this time that he adopted his first three Dobermans-an experience that further strengthened his love for dogs and gave him a personal appreciation for the human-animal bond. After earning his veterinary degree from Punjab Agricultural University in 1984, Dr. Chatrath began his career with Nestlé India, working in veterinary and dairy development. He later returned to his hometown to practice both general and dairy medicine at the local veterinary hospital.
Over the years, he developed a special interest in canine and feline medicine, cardiology, and building long-term relationships with pets and their families. In 2002, Dr. Chatrath moved to Canada, and in 2014, he joined the 48th Avenue Animal Hospital team, where he continues to practice with dedication and compassion. He also enjoys mentoring new veterinary graduates and sharing the knowledge he’s gained over decades of experience. Dr. Chatrath is proud to share the profession with his son, who is also a veterinarian-carrying forward the family’s passion for animal care into the next generation.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Chatrath loves gardening, spending time with family and friends, and discovering new restaurants. At home, he’s happiest surrounded by his beloved family-who bring energy, joy, and constant companionship to his life.
